Charlotte Tastes Fried

Today was a really fun day... despite a rough night.

Last night around 10... just as I was getting into bed myself, Grant woke up freaking out, inconsolable. He was crying and screaming, but non-verbal, so that means he was still asleep. Not wanting to wake up Jill and Grace, I scooped Grant up and brought him to my room. He continued the freak out and kept clawing at his legs. I wondered if he was itching because of mosquito bites or something, so I made the executive decision to give him Benadryl and Advil. Trust me, the way this kid was crying, something was definitely not right. He finally calmed down and fell asleep next to me around 11. No big deal. He woke up around 6:15 this morning ready to play. No matter what I did to try and persuade him to go back to sleep.. .he was up. I shuttled him downstairs... Jill and Grace had been down there for about 15 minutes already. I got Grant's breakfast going but then the need to puke arrived. Jill graciously kept Grant with Grace downstairs while I went up, threw up and dozed for another hour or so.

I got downstairs again about eight, had some breakfast... Jill and I chatted (we have that easy sort of relationship where we never run out of things to chat about) and then it was time for Grace to nap. Now, keep in mind, Grant absolutely adores them. His new favorite thing to do is try to make Grace laugh. He stops at nothing... and when he does make her laugh... he laughs... and it's awesome. He doesn't like it if Grace goes near his trains, but even tonight we had a long talk about sharing toys or the toys going away, and it worked. He shared his trains with her... through gritted teeth, but he did it.

Anyway, Grace took a quick morning nap with Jill, Grand I got dressed. We headed downtown to the Taste of Charlotte festival. The weather was perfect. Cloudy and warm-ish. We wandered around six blocks worth of restaurant booth sand craft/vendor booths tasting different things. My two favorites were a curried sea bass cake (it was absolutely delicious) and something called the “Soul Roll” from a soul food place. It's a spring roll wrapper filled with chicken, black-eyed-peas, collard greens and rice (and of course it's deep fried). You dip it in a bit of mustard. It was surprisingly delicious. Also, I had a fantastic macaroon (or two... yea, I'm certain it did my blood sugar no favors). Other than that, Charlotte apparently tastes fried. Everything there was fried... or came in the form of pulled pork, which I'm no fan of. Overall, it was a wonderful time to get outside and taste a few things we wouldn't have ever tried. By the time we were leaving it was H.O.T. I'm glad we got there when we did because the sun was very powerful. The kiddos napped on the way back to the house and then it was all about playtime. They played really hard for about an hour and a half before we decided to take them the the playground. Grant is a lot of fun at parks now because he's not afraid to go down slides... in fact... he LOVES the slides. He really can dominate that playground equipment... and it's so much fun to watch. After the park, we hit the grocery store to get a couple of steaks for dinner. We grilled steak and squash and had saffron rice. My blood sugar was 98 after. Couldn't ask for more. Before we knew it, it was time for another bath. Put the kids in together (like last night... SO CUTE) scrubbed the sunscreen off of them, back downstairs for a little more play time. Grace went to bed about 30 minutes before Grant. I cleaned up the downstairs and then... he was in dream land. Night four of no pacifier! Huzzah! Jill and I were both exhausted and made it to about 8:30 before we headed up to bed. Jill's battling some allergies AND dealing with a teething 9 month old, so she's done. It's been a really fun trip though and I always enjoy getting to spend time with her. Grace is about the cutest, sweetest thing ever. She just rolls everywhere... and is SO close to crawling. SO CLOSE.

So that's it from here. Jill leaves tomorrow then Drew comes home Monday. I'm missing him like crazy but I know he's having an amazing time fishing with his brother, so it's worth it. Tomorrow afternoon it's back to mundane chores like getting the car washed and going to the grocery store.... and getting ready for Drew's birthday!

I want to taste Charlotte! I love pulled pork! I love fried! I love soul
food!

That sounds like a really awesome time. It's so fun to have mommy
friends over. And baby friends. Grant is adorable; I'm impressed that he
shared his special trains. Good practice.
