Grant Willis Obituary

Grant Willis Dies

This community was deeply shocked and grieved Tuesday morning to learn that Grant Willis had died of a heart ailment the night before. Mr. Willis had spent the day at the Farmer's Elevator and seemed to be in his usual good health. Mrs. Willis was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Quanz, in Plainville, and Warren Willis was at band practice at Agra. When he returned home, he found his father had passed away during his absence. Grant was a cheerful disposition and will be sadly missed by all his relatives and friends. The funeral was held on Thursday at 10 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Kirwin.

Obituary

Ulysses Simpson Grant Willis, son of George W. and Annie Cook Willis, was born March 24, 1878, at Marengo, Iowa. When he was one year old, his parents moved to Kansas. Later they returned to Iowa, and when they came back to Kansas, he was a boy old enough to remember the trip well. At this time the family located in Phillips County near Kirwin.

He spent the greater part of his life in the vicinity of Kirwin. He was a member of Mrs. Barber's Sunday School class, the Boys Brigade, and the Congregational Church when a boy.

He graduated from the Kirwin High School and after farming north of Kirwin several years the Congregational minister, Mr. Kirkpatrick, persuaded him to attend Washburn College, a Congregational school, in Topeka, Kansas. He was graduated in 1909 and returned to Kirwin where he continued his farming on the farm four and one-half miles north of Kirwin where he lived the remainder of his life.

While he was attending college he met Grace Brewer, to whom he was united in marriage January 1, 1912. He brought her to the modern farm home he had planned and built himself. To this union were born five children: Jane Swartz of Plainville, Kansas; Grant Noble Willis of Seminole, Texas; Morris Brewer Willis of Manhattan, Kansas; Anna Belle Gaumer of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, and Warren Wesley Willis who is still at home.

He was constantly working to serve his family and community. He made a worthy contribution to upholding the high ideals of life. He was a devoted husband and father and to him his family was uppermost in his attention at all times.

His outstanding character was recognized throughout this county as being exemplary in every degree; a man who was sincere, straight forward, and bore malice to no one.

Although he could have gone into industry, he remained on the farm as he felt that farming could be advanced only by organization and cooperation.

When he was a young man he was active in the Farmers Union and was instrumental in helping to form the County Unit. He has been a member of the Farmers Elevator Board of Directors for nearly 25 years. He also aided in forming the County Farm Bureau.

He has been a member of the Masons, having been in both the Blue Lodge and the Chapter. He was also an active member in the Eastern Star and is a Part Patron.

He died suddenly on the evening of August 14, 1939, at the age of 61 years, 4 months, and 20 days. Those who survive his going are his wife, Grace Brewer Willis; their five children; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Stagg, two brothers, Thomas and Paul Willis, one granddaughter, Mary Grace Swartz, 12 nieces and nephews and a number of other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 17 at the Methodist Church in Kirwin, and were conducted by Rev. J. G. Roberts, pastor of the Phillipsburg Methodist Church. A large concourse of friends were present. Beautiful floral offerings were given by clubs and organizations as well as by private parties. Music was furnished by the Kirwin mixed quartet. The body was laid to rest in the Kirwin Cemetery.
